“Huichica is a particular standout both because of its affordability ($40 for the day) and its well-curated food and music offerings. One of the kind people at the Salumeria stand put it best as we dressed our knackwurst with sauerkraut: “This is just the best festival. Everyone here is so… happy!” — Serious Eats

“The annual Huichica Music Festival returns to Gundlach Bundschu Winery later this month for two days of indie music, food and wine in Sonoma. The music side of things is led by Blitzen Trapper, Fruit Bats, Cass McCombs Band, Damien Jurado and Jessica Pratt, while the Swimmingly-curated food offerings include Portland’s Bunk Sandwiches as well as Salumeria and Namu Gaji, among others. It all sounds like a pretty excellent way to spend a weekend.” — The Bay Bridged

KATHERINE CLAPNER - CIRCA: NOW

We ask interesting people the same three questions.

Katherine Clapner’s Dude, Sweet Chocolate paired with The Flaming Lips to create an anatomically correct chocolate heart containing a USB with 15 songs on the inside.

What was the last memorable thing you ate?

The entire meal at Anna Marie Pic in France.  it was the whole experience.  A three generation michelin starred restaurant of which the third is Anna Marie herself.  I would never be able to get that experience without my hosts at the time (Valrohna Chocolate).  You walk in and there is a room full of ALL the michelin books since it started all on display.  It was overwhelming and like going to where all chefs want to go and die.  The green gazpacho with a couer a la creme in the center was plain and simply etherial.  The cassis dessert was everything you imagine while being in France.  I could go on for pages and pages of this experience.

What was the last great show you saw?

Gogol Bordello at ACL Festival in Austin. I just stumbled on this stage and it was phenominal - two chicks with marching band like drums killing it, a crazy gypsy on the fiddle like none I had ever seen, and the singer (who was very hot I might add) was just everywhere.  It was a bonafide frenzy.

What’s something food and/or music-related that you’re looking forward to?

Last year I was on a plane back from NYC and saw Wayne Coyne and of course had to get my photo with him.  We struck up a conversation and I have been doing Wayne (just think about this for a sec) influenced and inspired chocolates.  We are working on a project of which I had Joshua King make the molds for.  I cannot say exactly what it is but it involves a skull that has never been done before and has detail that are the shit.  I have a little surprise coming out of that one that he does not even know about yet.  With this project I love the premise that nothing is out of bounds and that the music goes in the chocolate.  You have to really decide whether or not you want to break it or not to get to it.  It is art, chocolate and music all in one.

SOHRAB HABIBIO - CIRCA: NOW

We ask interesting people the same three questions.

Sohrab Hibibio co-founded DeSoto Records and the DC band Edsel. He currently plays guitar in Obits and lives in Brooklyn with his Zagat-editing wife.

What was the last memorable thing you ate?

I just finished eating lunch, so that’s particularly memorable. I work from home and usually make my own weekday midday meal, which is often a variation on … a whole wheat tortilla with hummus, feta, red pepper, cucumbers & jalapenos that my wife pickles overnight in the fridge, red cabbage or lettuce, quartered grape tomatoes, a little olive oil and fresh black pepper. Prior to that I’d say the traditional Tuscan bread soup I had on Sunday night at a great Italian restaurant in Clinton Hill called Locanda Vini & Olii.

What was the last great record you listened to?

Yesterday, through a series of loosely connected fragments, I was prompted to think about Paul Bowles, one of my favorite authors, so I pulled out an album he made with Bill Laswell in the mid-90s called Baptism of Solitude. Its basically Bowles reading short pieces of his writings with Laswell’s dark, ambient soundscape curling in and around his words. Not for everyone, but I really like it, and always enjoy hearing him say, “The head is where the cricket sings.” If I still had a tape deck, I’d put this on one side and on the other it’d be Weary Blues by Langston Hughes, Charles Mingus and Leonard Feather. I could drive across the country and back just listening to those two albums.

What’s something food and/or music related that you’re looking forward to?

I’m going on tour in about a month. We never go for very long, maybe 2 or 2 ½ weeks tops, but it’s always great. Not only is it fun to play our music and hang out with the other guys in the band, but when we travel we meet interesting people and learn little bits about their lives and their cities. This particular trip includes a bunch of places we’ve never been before, like Kiev, Wroclaw, Trier and Bratislava, which means a chance to try some local specialities we’ve never had before.

ROB DRINKENSTEIN - CIRCA: NOW

We ask interesting people the same three questions.

Rob Drinkenstein is a guitar player and barman at La Capitale in Salem, Oregon.

What was the last memorable thing you ate?

I just had a terrific meal at the Blue Goat in Dayton, Or. Goat sausage empanadas, house made hummus with fresh baked bread, pork butt tamales with spiced rhubarb salsa all washed down with a bottle of Bryn Mawr “Krista”s Block” Pinot Noir. It was so great to have a meal where everything was not just “local” but really local. Every bit was from within 5 miles of the restaurant. Oregon, in my opinion, is fast becoming the leader not just in Craft Beers, Pinot Noir, and Craft Distilling but in the movement to eat fresh and local.  It reminds me of my days in Berlin where everything on the table you knew exactly where it came from. A lot of happy memories in that meal…

What was the last great show you saw?

I just saw Alejandro Escovedo in Portland. He’s one of those guys you probably have never heard of, but know most of his songs. The people that have recorded his music reads like a who’s who of Rock and Roll. Seeing him live and hearing him do the songs I love so much, the way he intended them to be, was incredible. Such power and grace in his words. I’ve seen him a few times before, but this time he went way back in his collection, from his days with The Nuns (one of the first true Punk bands) the True Believers, and Buick MacKane. Scott McCaughey from R.E.M - the Young fresh Fellows and the Minus 5 joined him on stage and it became one of those shows where you just start to wonder if the people around you see the magic that is happening.

What is something food and/or music related that you’re looking forward to?

I’m headed for Seattle’s Bumbershoot. Can’t wait, it’s always so cool to see the amount of fresh, little-known bands off the main stage. I dig this way more than the headlining acts every year. I mean it’s always fun to see the folks you have heard about, but for me it’s far cooler to “discover” that band that hasn’t quite made it yet. It’s like finding that great burrito joint that you can eat well, get a cold beer and never wait in line, six months before it gets so hot you can’t get a table. I love that feeling.

ERIN ARCHULETA - CIRCA: NOW

We ask interesting people the same three questions.

Erin Archuleta co-owns ICHI Sushi with her chef husband and is the former Director of Field Operations for Dave Eggers’ 826 National.

What was the last memorable thing you ate?

My husband (Chef Tim Archuleta) and I recently visited Chicago and had an incredible meal at Fat Rice. I haven’t been able to stop evangelizing their pickled jellyfish.

What was the last great show you saw?

The Black Star reunion show at the Fox Theater in Oakland a couple months ago was fifteen years in the making and fantastic - even with Mos Def being a little hoarse.

What’s something food and/or music related that you’re looking forward to?

We can’t wait to support our friends playing in the upcoming Deltron 3030 show at Stern Grove (SF) - That will be a picnic basket packed with crazy-delicious sandwiches from Pig & Pie in the Mission, a total gem and a crowd-pleaser for our meaty and veggie pals.

“Over the past decade, we’ve seen the rise of the foodie class and decline of the record industry. Are the two related? … Is $8 a reasonable price for an order of duck fat french fries just because we can stream our music for free on Spotify?” — The Washington Post asks, “Are foodies quietly killing rock and roll?”

“Huichica is not your average music festival: the blog Swimming.ly has hand picked food from Portland’s Bunk Sandwiches and San Franisco’s Salumeria to complement the performances and we’ll be pairing our tasty brews with their selections. We can’t imagine a more perfect reunion of great music, an incredible outdoor setting, and damn tasty beer.” — Deschutes Brewery
